As a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Ashland Theological Seminary faculty member recognizes that the ministry of theological education is a high calling. This calling is more than just academic. It is grounded in the discipline’s transformational journey toward Christian maturity, a process characterized by pursuit of intimacy with the Father, by yieldedness to the Spirit’s work of reshaping the disciple in Christ’s character and image, and by commitment to the people of Christ’s body, the church. The ATS faculty member seeks to incarnate the seminary’s core values. He or she evidences commitment to Scriptural integrity, spiritual formation, Christian community, and academic excellence by integrating each value into the responsibilities and opportunities that comprise an appointment to this seminary faculty. The faculty member approaches the calling of theological education with a deep concern for students’ personal and professional formation, seeking to impact their lives and ministries through a transforming process incorporating teaching, modeling, mentoring, and equipping.
As a steward of the calling to be a theological educator at ATS, the faculty member will continue to strive for excellence in his or her discipline. Through ongoing education, critical inquiry and reflection, and service to the church and world, the faculty member demonstrates both a commitment to and passion for developing a transforming learning community at ATS. The pursuit of academic excellence should be motivated by a desire not only for personal achievement, but, even more, for the enhancement of the seminary’s reputation in the academic and ecclesiastical community and for the modeling of a scholarship and service that can bring renewal and transformation to the individual, the church, and society, for the glory of God.
