Institute of Formational Counseling

The Institute of Formational Counseling (IFC) seeks to equip Christian Leaders in proven pathways of healing for broken people. Created in 2003, the Institute focuses upon the ministries of Formational Prayer, Spiritual Direction and Pastoral Counseling. We have discovered that equipping leaders in these dynamic ministries has a profound impact upon those being trained as well as the men and women they serve. Through IFC, Ashland offers Spirit-empowered training opportunities to leaders from around the world.

Director's Message

Countless people, both Christian and non-Christian alike, battle deep emotional pain as a result of wounds from the past. The struggle is often so intense that it significantly debilitates people, compromising the level of well-being and joy that Christ intended for their lives. The Father of comfort and compassion cares about these individuals and has made provision for their healing through Jesus Christ.

The Institute of Formational Counseling is dedicated to equipping Christian caregivers to help broken people find freedom and wholeness in Christ. Integrating Formational Prayer, Transformational Spiritual Direction and Pastoral Counseling, the Institute provides seminars, training events, programs for degree and non-degree seeking students, and specialized resources designed to empower caregivers as healing servants of the Lord.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of all compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in trouble...” II Corinthians 1.3-4

Testimonials

Donna Thomas, D.Min., L.P.C.C
Formational Prayer Seminar

"The Formational Prayer Seminar profoundly impacted me both personally and professionally. My relationship with Jesus was deepened immensely during the intense prayer times. During those four days I drank in the powerful moving of the Holy Spirit. This greater intimacy with Christ spilled over naturally into my counseling profession as I continue to bring an awakened spirit to my sessions with the hurting people to which I minister."

Jeffery L. Caldwell
The Essentials Seminar

"The Essentials was truly a transformational experience for me. The concepts that I learned are far more than merely information – something to be filed away and forgotten. I encountered God in the classroom, in the chapel, and during private ministry time. These encounters were episodic in nature and have now become an intricate part of the overall narrative of my life! I have already incorporated and integrated much of what I learned and experienced into my ministry context and I intend to continue doing so. Thanks to everyone who took part in making it happen."

Small Group Seminar

"The attention to group dynamics in lecture was priceless. It was very practical, and equipped well (“This is how you do it!”). The balance between small group work and the lectures was just right. Thank you for passing on the precious deposit placed within you, and doing it in such a personal way. We are so grateful. The group leaders were perceptive, skillful, and empathic…what rich times of worship and healing we experienced together."
