The Faculty, Administration, and Staff are deeply saddened by the passing of our brother, friend, and colleague, Dr. Michael Thompson. Mike came to Ashland Theological Seminary as Associate Professor of Practical Theology in April 2005. For over 15 years, Mike made a significant impact upon his students and colleagues in his teaching, his faithful example as a disciple of Jesus Christ, and the good humor and positive attitude he brought to us all. He will be terribly missed.
Dr. Thompson received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Circleville Bible College (Ohio Christian University) in 1980; a Master of Arts in Religion from Wesley Biblical Seminary (1982); a Master of Arts degree from Ashland Theological Seminary (1989); and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University Theological School (1993).
During his career at Ashland Theological Seminary, Dr. Thompson was promoted from Associate Professor to Full Professor of Practical Theology in January 2013, served on several committees and as department chair. Included in the numerous classes that he taught were, Homiletics, Proclaiming the Word of God, Preaching Practicum, Educational Leadership of the Pastor, Discipling, Person in Ministry, Communication and Conflict in the Church, Senior Seminar, The Preacher and Contemporary Issues, Forming the People of God, Adult Discipleship and Small Group Ministry, Masters of Preaching, Disciple-making and the Community of Faith.
Dr. Thompson’s service to Christ and his Church went well beyond his work at the Seminary. He was Pastor at New Holland United Methodist Church (2010-2016); Warren Free Methodist Church (1986-1990); and North Park Wesleyan (1982-1986). Between 1990 and 2005, Dr. Thompson held five interim pastor positions. He was a frequent guest speaker at Ashland University as well as other institutions such as Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Indiana Wesleyan University, and Houghton College. Dr. Thompson was also a member of the Society of Professors in Christian Education. In 1998, Dr. Thompson was given the H.K. Busby Ministry Award.
Mike was a loving and devoted husband and father. He leaves behind his wife, Josetta, whom he married on June 16, 1979, and his children Laura and Taylor.
