This degree is intended to prepare students for further graduate study in history, theology, or ethics; to equip leaders for teaching in denominational or local church contexts; and to serve Christians who do not plan to teach but who desire a deeper understanding of their faith. The degree is flexible to serve these different purposes. It can be completed through online courses, face-to-face courses, or a combination of both. A master’s thesis is optional.

Having completed the MA (Historical & Theological Studies), students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate critical and faithful interpretation and responsible use of Scripture in appropriate ministry and professional settings.
  • Establish communal and personal disciplines that nourish Christian spiritual and moral formation.
  • Form a missional vision of kingdom ministry within multi-cultural and multi-faith contexts.
  • Demonstrate critical theological reflection that is biblically faithful, historically grounded, contextually relevant, and integrated with life and ministry.
  • Develop ongoing practices of justice that bear witness to the full scope of the kingdom of God.
  • Demonstrate skill in historical and/or theological research.

Students earning the Master of Arts (Historical & Theological Studies) degree must complete 55 credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale. This degree may be completed entirely online or through a combination of course delivery methods.

Beth's first audited class awakened the desire within her to earn a full seminary degree. She has no idea what lies beyond the degree but is excited to walk that path in faith.

Mike's first year at seminary has confirmed that ATS is where God wants him. The professors, classes, and quickly-developed friendships have all contributed in different and significant ways to BOTH Mike's academic and spiritual growth.
